Navjot Singh Sidhu gets one-year jail in 1988 road rage case

The Supreme Court has awarded cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu one-year jail in a 1988 road rage case. The Supreme Court had earlier allowed the review of its May 2018 order exonerating former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu in the 34-year-old highway rage case, in which Patiala resident Gurnam Singh had died.

Sidhu shall be taken into custody by Punjab police as per the order. Sidhu was earlier let off with a nice of Rs 1,000. Now, the maximum possible punishment underneath Section 323 of the IPC has been awarded to Sidhu.

On May 15, 2018, the apex court put aside the Punjab and Haryana High Court order convicting Sidhu of culpable homicide and awarding him a three-year jail term within the case however had held him guilty of causing hurt to a senior citizen.

The prosecution alleged that Sidhu and his aide Rupinder Singh Sandhu had parked their car in the middle of a road close to Patiala city’s Sheranwala Gate Crossing. A person who was driving by along with his household had requested Sidhu and Sandhu to move their car, leading to a heated brawl.

In September 1999, a trial court had acquitted Sidhu of all charges.

Reversing the decision, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, in December 2008, held Sidhu and Sandhu guilty of homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 (II) of the Indian Penal Code and convicted them to three years in jail.

In May 2018, the Supreme Courtroom had set aside the order. The Supreme Courtroom had held Sidhu guilty of voluntarily inflicting harm to a senior citizen and fined him Rs 1,000, but spared him the jail term.

In September 2018, the Supreme Courtroom had agreed to hear a review petition filed by the household of the deceased man. In February, the court docket had asked Sidhu to file a response to the application that sought harsher fees against him.
