Sonam Kapoor, who has been highlighting the contributions of women within the movie industry along with her #WomenInFilm collection on Instagram, talked about sexism in Bollywood. She stated that there needs to be a change in the method that music lyrics and scripts are written about girls.
In a new interview, Sonam stated that even now, it’s believed that female actors need to act and dress in a sure manner. She added that women have to take a stand for themselves and ‘make higher choices’
“There nonetheless exists this idea of working with the ‘huge hero’ to succeed. And female actors have to be a sure manner, costume a sure manner, and talk in a sure way to ‘slot in’. You continue to have your teams reminding you to ‘match the mould’. I’m lucky that my staff isn’t like that, but it occurs all the time!,” she advised Cosmopolitan India.
Sonam stated that the ladies of the movie industry have to rally collectively and switch down movies and projects which are sexist. “Have a look at the way music lyrics or scripts are written about girls… that should change. The way girls are portrayed and talked about within the business is just not okay, and as girls, we should always not conform to work in these movies as a result of we’re simply harming ourselves. There is no worth too high, particularly considering all that has occurred over this year… Everyone one of us must make higher selections, or we can be subjected to a witch-hunt and we will be burnt on the stake!” she stated.
Earlier, on the HT Youth Forum in Chandigarh, Sonam had talked about doing her bit to discourage pay disparity in Bollywood. “I refuse to work with movie producers who pay feminine actors lower than males. I used to be advised, ‘You can afford to do so as you have a safety web. You come from a wealthy household.’ I’ve been fending for myself since I used to be 18. It’s onerous for me additionally to say no to cash but as somebody who feels it isn’t morally right to get much less paid than male stars, I don’t work for such producers,” she stated.
Sonam, who completed 13 years in Bollywood earlier this month, had two releases last year – Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and The Zoya Issue. She is but to confirm her next project.
